5 Questions Every
Good Coach Asks First
Before any advice. Before any plan. Before anything else.
1. “What would need to change for this to feel different?”
Not “what do you want” — what needs to change. People have often been solving the wrong problem.
2. “What have you already tried — and what did you learn?”
This stops you from giving advice that has already failed. It also reminds the person they have done more than they think.
3. “What would you do if you were not afraid of getting it wrong?”
People almost always know what they want to do. Fear just makes it invisible. This question makes it visible again.
4. “Who else is affected — and have you considered what they need?”
Most decisions are not made in isolation. Good coaching holds the whole picture.
5. “What does success look like — in specific, concrete terms?”
Vague goals create vague progress. This question forces clarity. That is where movement starts.
